Team Effort Leads Michigan Past Louisville At 2026 College Baseball Series
Team Effort Leads Michigan Past Louisville At 2026 College Baseball Series
A balanced effort from Michigan - big hits and solid pitching - helps the Wolverines past Louisville at the 2026 College Baseball Series, 8-5.

The University of Michigan offense came alive Saturday at the 2026 College Baseball Series in Arlington, Texas, where the Wolverines bested No. 15 Louisville 8-5 to end a losing streak and bounce back after being handcuffed by No. 16 Florida State a day earlier.
Michigan was able to shut down a sixth-inning rally from the Cardinals at Globe Life Field and then add three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn a one-run advantage into some breathing room.
The difference was a 405-foot three-run home run to left center by junior infielder Colby Turner that put the Wolverines ahead by three, and the UM defense was able to do the rest.
Their clash was the first of three games on the second day of the 2026 Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 2, and it was the first time they’ve faced off since 2022.
The day’s other games will be Florida State against No. 9 Auburn at 4 p.m. Eastern and Kansas State taking on Nebraska in the nightcap at 8 p.m. EST – and every minute of the action will be broadcast live on FloCollege and the FloSports app.

Louisville was looking to win its fourth consecutive game, a streak that included a 4-2 come-from-behind win Friday afternoon against Nebraska, while Michigan was on a two-game slide after opening the year with three straight victories.
The Michigan offense was stifled Friday by Florida State, managing just three hits in the 6-1 loss. The 3-4-5 hitters each had one hit in the game, and the lone run came from a solo homer by Turner. The two round-trippers this weekend are the first of the season for Turner.
Over the two games at Globe Life Field, home of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, Michigan has surrendered 22 hits en route to the 1-1 record.
In the win Saturday, Michigan scored its eight runs on 10 hits, while leaving six runners on base. Cade Ladehoff, Brenden Stressler and Turner each had two hits for the Wolverines.
It took three Michigan pitchers to keep Louisville at bay, and junior right-hander Cade Montgomery picked up the win with a five-inning performance that included six hits, four runs, four strikeouts and a walk.
Freshman southpaw Shane Brinham held things together for 2 1/3 innings, and junior righty Gavin DeVooght contributed 1 2/3 hitless innings to secure the save, his third of the season.
Despite the loss, the Louisville offense certainly wasn’t silent on the day, plating five runs on nine hits, while stranding seven runners.
Junior Lucas Moore and sophomore Tague Davis each had two hits for the Cardinals, with three of the four going for extra bases, while Davis’ performance included three RBIs and a run.
The Cardinals sent four pitchers to the mound Saturday, with starter Jake Bean, a junior right-hander, suffering the loss. He went 3 2/3 innings, surrendering five hits and five runs, while striking out eight and walking one.
Louisville and Michigan both entered Saturday’s showdown at 3-2 early in the 2026 collegiate baseball season, but they were going in different directions. With their fortunes reversed in the matchup, the Wolverines improve to 4-2, and the Cardinals fall to 3-3.
Saturday’s contest was the 12th all-time meeting between the two squads, and Louisville still owns a 9-3 advantage in the series.
The Cardinals have hosted nine of the games, and three have been played at neutral locations. They last met in 2022, playing six times throughout the season. They combined for 96 runs in those games, with Louisville winning four times.
The 2026 season marks the sixth consecutive year of college baseball at Globe Life Field and the third straight year the action spans three weekends.
The schedule includes the Shriners Children’s College Showdown (Feb. 13-15), Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 2 (Feb. 20-22) and Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented – Weekend 3 (Feb. 27-March 1), all of which will bring 18 teams to Arlington.
Louisville is making its third appearance in the last four editions of the College Baseball Series and will wrap up this year’s visit against Auburn on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.
Michigan will close the trip with a night game against Kansas State. They’ll get underway Sunday at 7:30 p.m. EST.

About Louisville Baseball
Louisville is coming off a 42-24 campaign that included a 15-15 mark and middle-of-the-pack finish ACC play, before the 10th-seeded Cardinals were bounced from the opening round of the ACC Baseball Championship by Pitt.
The Cardinals used the disappointment as a springboard after earning one of the ACC’s nine berths in the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
They rolled through the Nashville Regional and defeated Miami 2-1 to win the Louisville Super Regional and advance to the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 2019 and sixth time overall. It was the 19th consecutive tournament with an ACC team playing in the MCWS
Louisville went 2-2 at Charles Schwab Field and lost to eventual national runner-up Coastal Carolina 11-3 in the semifinals. Coastal Carolina then lost to LSU 2-0 in the best-of-three championship series.
Consecutive losses to Michigan State to start the 2026 season for Louisville were followed by a redemption win against the Spartans and a high-scoring victory over Xavier.
In the 23-11 win against Xavier on Tuesday, nine of Cardinals’ 23 hits went for extra bases, eight players recorded multiple hits, led by Alex Alicea and Tague Davis with four apiece, all nine starters scored at least one run and eight drove in multiple runs.
Louisville now is back at Globe Life Field for the third time in four years.
Last year, the Cardinals were 2-1 at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown with wins over No. 7 Texas and No. 12 Arizona and a loss to No.13 Oklahoma State.
Their 2023 visit to Arlington came a few games into the season, and the Cardinals were 3-0, defeating No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 10 TCU and Michigan.

About Michigan Baseball
In the 2026 Big Ten Preseason Poll, Michigan was picked to finish outside the top 6, but that’s not completely undeserved after a 33-23 overall record in 2025 and a 16-14 conference mark that saw the Wolverines finish in a tied for sixth place in the 17-team Big Ten standings.
Michigan also made a quick exit from the 2026 Big Ten Tournament, losing to Illinois and eventual tournament champion UCLA during pool play. The regular-season title was shared by Oregon and UCLA. They both were 22-8 in conference games.
The Wolverines were hoping they’d done enough to advance to the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, but that was not the case. Only four teams from the Big Ten earned berths – Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA and USC.
Michigan has reached the mountaintop before and owns a pair of Division I baseball national titles (1953, 1962), along with a runner-up finish to Vanderbilt in 2019.
Coming into the 2026 College Baseball Series, Cade Ladehoff was red hot for the Wolverines with a 1.074 OPS, joining Brenden Stressler as Michigan’s only hitters above 1.000. The junior reached base in the team’s first four games with hits in three, totaling five hits — three for extra bases — along with two runs and two RBIs.
Against Florida State in Arlington, Ladehoff and Stressler both were 1 for 4, accounting for two of the team’s three hits.
Another standout for Michigan early in the 2026 season has been Evan Haeger, who earned Surprise College Baseball Series MVP honors after going 5 for 12 with five RBIs, all with two outs.
He drove in a career-high four runs against Oregon State and arrived in Arlington hitting .400 with six hits, two runs and five RBIs on the season. He was 0 for 4 against the Seminoles on Friday.
