FSU Baseball Defeats Michigan 6-1 Behind Wes Mendes' Dominant Start
Wes Mendes struck out seven over five-plus scoreless innings as No. 16 Florida State beat Michigan 6-1. Gabe Fraser finished a home run shy of the cycle.

Wes Mendes set the tone early and the Florida State Baseball offense did the rest as the No. 16 Seminoles defeated Michigan 6-1 on Friday at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series Weekend 2 opener.
Mendes dominated across five-plus scoreless innings, scattering one hit while striking out seven. The left-hander worked efficiently through the Wolverines’ lineup and stranded the few threats he faced, handing a 3-0 lead to the bullpen.
John Abraham and Cooper Whited bridged the late innings before Gabe Nard closed it out.

At the plate, Gabe Fraser sparked the offense and finished a home run shy of the cycle. He tripled in the second, doubled later in the game and added a single as Florida State built steady pressure.
Jace Estes drove in two runs and Brayden Dowd delivered a key two-run double during a three-run sixth that stretched the lead to 6-0.
Michigan’s lone run came on a solo homer by Colby Turner in the ninth.

Michigan spoiled the shutout in the ninth when Colby Turner launched a solo home run to deep left off Cooper Whited. After a hit batter and an error put two aboard, Florida State turned to Gabe Nard, who recorded a flyout, a strikeout and a groundout to close out the 6-1 win.

Florida State put a runner on in the eighth after a pinch-hit single by Kelvyn Paulino Jr. and later drew a walk from Kaden Frommelt, but Michigan used two pitching changes to quiet the threat. Michael Quedens struck out Gabe Fraser to end the inning and keep it 6-0.

Florida State turned to John Abraham in the sixth, and the bullpen kept Michigan quiet. After Wes Mendes recorded the first out on a fly ball, Abraham struck out Brenden Stressler and induced a groundout from Colby Turner to complete another scoreless inning and maintain the 3-0 lead.

Friday’s matchup features two of college baseball’s winningest programs. Michigan ranks fourth all-time with 3,127 wins in 153 seasons, just four ahead of Florida State, which is fifth with 3,123 victories across 79 seasons.
Evan Haeger Was A Star For Michigan At College Baseball Series In Surprise, Arizona
Evan Haeger earned Surprise College Baseball Series MVP honors after going 5-for-12 with five RBI, all with two outs. He drove in a career-high four against Oregon State and is hitting .400 with six hits, two runs and five RBI this season.
Florida State Baseball At Big League Parks
Florida State is 15-4 all-time in 19 games at MLB ballparks, including 1-0 at a current major league venue. The Seminoles went 12-4 at the Metrodome and have also played at Steinbrenner Field, Fenway Park and Charles Schwab Field Omaha, site of four FSU College World Series trips since 2011.

The junior transfer tops U-M in hits, OBP, slugging and total bases. Stressler played in 89 games the last two years for St. Louis and slashed .287/.410/.495 in 2025 with 62 hits and 39 walks for the Billikens.

Wes Mendes, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound left-hander, transferred to Florida State after beginning his career at Ole Miss. Now a full-time starter, he owns a 5.91 ERA over 109 2/3 innings with a 26.9% strikeout rate.
Mendes features a low-90s fastball that plays up in the zone, a gyro slider and a high-70s changeup that flashes plus and generates strong swing-and-miss rates.

Tate Carey, RHP, Michigan Baseball
Tate Carey emerged as a high-usage reliever and spot starter for Michigan in 2025, posting a 3.63 ERA with 51 strikeouts and 18 walks over 57 innings. Working mostly out of the bullpen, he attacked hitters with a low-to-mid-90s fastball.
After a Freshman All-American season, Carey is moving into the rotation as Michigan pushes for its first NCAA tournament bid since 2022.
