There are three collegiate baseball teams from Texas in the 2026 D1Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings, but Texas Tech isn’t one of them.

In fact, the Red Raiders struggled mightily in 2025. They started the season with four consecutive losses and finished the year with a 20-33 record.

That’s all in the past, however, and the team now has a chance to make a statement against three of the nation’s top teams at the 2026 College Baseball Series in Arlington, Texas.

Texas Tech is kicking off its 2026 campaign against three programs from the powerful Southeastern Conference, winner of every NCAA Division I Baseball Championship since 2019.

The Red Raiders’ first game at Globe Life Field was Friday against former Big 12 foe Oklahoma, the only one of this weekend’s opponents not ranked in the top 25, while the second day of the 2026 Shriners Children’s College Showdown will be against No. 23 Vanderbilt at noon Eastern. Oklahoma defeated Texas Tech in the opener, 10-3.

Every game of the three-weekend College Baseball Series is being broadcast live on FloCollege and the FloSports app.

The 2026 season marks the sixth consecutive year of college baseball at Globe Life Field, home of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, and the third straight year the action spans three weekends.

The schedule includes the Shriners Children’s College Showdown (Feb. 13-15), Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 2 (Feb. 20-22) and Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented – Weekend 3 (Feb. 27-March 1), all of which will bring 18 teams to Arlington.

Texas Tech is joined in the opening event by Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Christian University and Vanderbilt.

The Texas Tech-Vanderbilt clash will be the first of Saturday’s three games and will be followed by Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma at 4 p.m. Eastern and Arkansas vs. TCU at 8 p.m. EST.

This will be the third appearance for the Red Raiders at the College Baseball Series in the last five seasons, including the first games of their 2022 and 2024 campaigns.

Believe it or not, despite many decades of play for both teams, and the fact that both squads made it to the Men’s College World Series in 2014 and 2019, Saturday’s meeting will be the first in history between Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt Extends Lead Against Texas Tech With Sixth-Inning Home Run

Johnston goes deep again for Vanderbilt, his second home run in as many days, and he extends the Commodores' lead to 9-2 with a 418-foot blast to center field.

Through six innings, both teams have sent three pitchers to the mound.

Texas Tech Cuts Into Deficit Against Commodores, Vanderbilt Leads 8-2

Vanderbilt starts the fifth inning with a pitching change, bringing in freshman right-hander Tyler Baird for starter Austin Nye.

Two walks and a single for Texas Tech loads the bases, and a fielder's choice grounder allows one run to score.

A 4-6-3 double play on the next batter gets Vanderbilt out of the inning without further harm.

After four and a half innings, Vanderbilt leads 8-2.

Trouble Continues For Texas Tech In Fourth Inning Against Vanderbilt

In case you're just tuning in, the bottom of the fourth inning featured eight runs from Vanderbilt on five hits and two errors.

The Commodores lead 8-1.

Wowza!

Commodores Break Open The Game In The Bottom Fourth, Lead Texas Tech 5-1

The first Vanderbilt home run is followed by an infield single, a stolen base, an RBI double and a two-run home run from sophomore Ryker Waite (the first of his collegiate career) to make it 5-1 with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After the second out, back-to-back errors from Texas Tech gives Vandy runners on first and second, and the chaos necessitates a pitching change for TTU. Sophomore left-hander comes in for Pirko.

Pirko goes 3 2/3, giving up five runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out two. He threw 72 pitches.

Vanderbilt Baseball Now On Top Against Texas Tech, Commodores Lead 2-1

A walk to start the bottom of the fourth inning is followed by a two-run homer to left field by junior Braden Holcomb, putting Vanderbilt ahead of Texas Tech, 2-1.

For a 2-1 game, there  sure are a lot of awesome moments to clip and post!

There's thunder and lightning outside in Arlington, Texas, and flashes of leather under the roof at Globe Life Field!

Texas Tech Ends Second Inning Quickly, Vandy Returns The Favor In The Third; Red Raiders Lead Vanderbilt 1-0

Texas Tech shuts down the Commodores 1-2-3 in the bottom of the second inning.

Vanderbilt returns the favor in the top of the third inning. Three up, three down.

TTU 1, Vanderbilt 0

Texas Tech Can't Capitalize, Unable To Add To Lead Over Vanderbilt Baseball

A single by junior catcher Matt Quintanar and a pair of walks load the bases for Texas Tech with one out in the top of the second inning.

Nye pitches out of the jam and walks away unharmed. TTU strands three.

Texas Tech 1, Vanderbilt 0

Vanderbilt Baseball Strands Two Runners In Opening Inning Against Texas Tech

Junior catcher Colin Barczi continues his offensive tear with the first hit of the game for Vanderbilt, a single. He was 3 for 5 in the opener against TCU, with three home runs.

A one-out double from Brodie Johnston gets Barczi to third. Johnston was 3 for 5 Friday with a double and a home run.

A grounder ends the inning, stranding two Vanderbilt runners.

Texas Tech 1, Vanderbilt 0 after one full inning.

Texas Tech Not Wasting Any Time Against Vanderbilt Baseball

A full-swing dribbler to the mound by junior center fielder Kyeler Thompson ends up with him on second base after a throwing error.

A sac bunt by Tracer Lopez gets Thompson to third.

Thompson scores the game's first run after a grounder to third. It's ruled a single, and the throw from third to home isn't fielded cleanly, allowing Thompson to score.

Texas Tech 1, Vanderbilt 0. Top of the first inning, one out, runner on first.

Breakfast Baseball? Yes, Please. Settle In For Texas Tech vs. Vanderbilt In Arlington, Texas

We're about to get underway at Globe Life Field with Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.

Both teams lost on the opening day of the event and are searching for their first wins of the 2026 campaign.

Sophomore right-hander Austin Nye is on the mound for Vanderbilt, and TTU will be up first.

Did You Know: Baseball America ranks Nye as the No. 9 college prospect in next year's draft.

A 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-hander for the Commodores he, has positioned himself for a prominent draft spot in 2027 after posting a 3.55 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 50.2 innings as one of the nation’s top midweek starters.

He works in the low 90s and has touched 95 mph, pairing his fastball with a sharp low-80s slider and an effective changeup that misses bats, particularly against left-handed hitters.

Junior righty Lukas Pirko will be on the hill for Texas Tech.

About Texas Tech Baseball

Texas Tech had an off season in 2025, going 20-33 overall and 13-17 in Big 12 play to land in the bottom half of the conference standings.

The Red Raiders didn’t fare much any better in the 2025 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, where they lost to Cincinnati in the opening round to conclude their season.

Recent lull aside, Texas Tech has had a solid couple of decades.

The Red Raiders have won five Big 12 titles (1997, 1998, 2016, 2017, 2019) and made four appearances at the Men’s College World Series (2014, 2016, 2018, 2019).

Heading into this season, Texas Tech earned the No. 9 spot in the 14-team 2026 Big 12 Baseball Preseason Poll, while a handful of players received individual recognition.

Junior outfielder Logan Hughes was named to the NCBWA Division I Preseason All-America Third Team, and catcher Matt Quintanar landed on the NCBWA Division I Preseason All-America Fourth Team.

Both standouts also found their way on to the 2026 D1Baseball Top Draft Prospects list, along with teammates Parker Hyutra (RHP), Connor Shouse (INF) and Kyler Thompson (OF).

Infielder Linkin Garcia and pitcher Adam Hayes earned recognition as part of the 2026 D1Baseball Impact Freshman list.

Did You Know: After playing from 1926-1929, the Texas Tech baseball team went on hiatus until 1954.

About Vanderbilt Baseball

Vanderbilt finished the 2025 college baseball season with a 43-18 record after being bounced from the NCAA Nashville Regional.

The Commodores, the 2014 and 2019 NCAA national champions, opened the 2025 Division I Baseball Championship with a win over Wright State but then lost to Louisville and Wright State in consecutive games to close the door on their campaign.

After finishing tied for third place in the competitive SEC last year and earning the No. 4 seed for the SEC Tournament, Vanderbilt went on to win the tournament and earned an opportunity to add another national title.

In the championship game of the 2025 SEC Tournament, the Vanderbilt pitching staff held off Ole Miss to secure a 3-2 victory and the fifth SEC Tournament title for the Commodores.

Following the event, the SEC found the national spotlight with a record 13 (of 16) SEC teams advancing to the Division I Baseball Championship.

This season, Vanderbilt has been picked to finish fourth in possibly the most competitive league in all of NCAA athletics, while the Commodores hope to get the momentum going in the right direction with another winning weekend at Globe Life after going 2-1 in 2023.
