Mississippi State Extends Win Streak To 11, Beats Virginia Tech

The undefeated Mississippi State baseball team took on a scrappy Virginia Tech Hokies in a College Baseball Series game under the dome at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
First pitch was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Mississippi State entered the game on a ten win streak and were in the midst of the biggest challenge of the season yet. They handed Arizona State a second loss of the season, winning 8-4 to start the event on Friday.

Virginia Tech's weekend only gets more difficult after an opening loss to Texas A&M on Friday after just seven innings, 0-10 and the 15-8 loss to Mississippi State.
Mississippi State was great on both sides of the ball. Bats were on fire with Aidan Teel getting things started. Virginia Tech almost had a late rally, though, starting the 9th inning with three home runs in four pitches to bring the deficit to just seven.

Mississippi State 15, Virginia Tech 8
Anderson French hit a home run out deep to right field to add a run for VT to start the bottom of the ninth.
Just two pitches later, Hudson Lutterman followed it up with his own homer—the first of the season deep to left field on the upper deck.

Then, one more pitch later, Sam Gates grabbed the back-to-back-to-back home run for Virginia Tech. A third home run in four pitches and Braden Booth is pulled out for Jack Gleason.
Gleason beat Oxendine on strike three for the first out.
On the full count pitch, Gleason beat Locurto with a high fastball to the crowd's roar.
He ended the game with Burzonski looking at the final strike.

Reese hit a bullet up the middle for a single.
Sullivan followed him with a high lob to the second baseman for the first out. Stallman was walked next to put runners on first and second. The ninth walk of the game.
Frei was walked as well, on four straight balls.
Josh Berzonski came in to relieve Jacob Exum with the bases loaded.
Chone James was hit by a pitch to advance the runners and bring in another score.
Drew Wyers pinched in and singled it out to right field to advance another.
Nunnallee struck out swinging for the second out.
Jacob Parker hit a fly ball out to CF to close out the inning.

VT is in run rule range as we head into the penultimate inning.
Jack Bauer takes the mound for MState and CJ Oxendine pinches in for Grube to start the 8th. Oxendine singled up the middle to pick up his first base hit as a freshman at VT.
Locurto hit a single to second base to safely take a base. Oxendine made it to third. Locurto advanced to second on a wild pitch that Raymond couldn't find. It bounced up and cracked Raymond in the collarbone before trickling away from the plate.
Chone James will take his spot after he left his spot wincing.
After the pause, Aimon Chandler stepped in to pinch hit with a bombing oppo home run deep to center field for his first hit. 3 runs come in for the Hokies.

Braden Booth has been called in from the bullpen to replace Bauer.
Hughes grounded out to first base. Booth rotated over to make the reception from Stallman.
Willie Hurt grounded out to second base.
Daniel grounded out to third base for a quick wrap up the 8th.

Danny Lazaro steps in for Virginia Tech to try to get out of the game without allowing any more runs.
Frei stepped in first to hit a fly out to right.
Raymond was walked off of five pitches.
Woodson's great day continues as he gets his third hit, a single through to left field.

Peter Mershon pinch hits for Aidan Teel and hits a grounder out to short for the final out.

7th inning stretch time as the Mississippi State Bulldogs blow this game open to an eight-run difference.
Anderson French pinches in to hit for Henry Cooke. He strikes out looking at a change-up from Brendan Sweeney.
Lutterman popped a fly up to first base, Stallman pulled it down.
Sam Gates pinched in for Ethan Gibson, who also struck out swinging to Sweeney.

Aiden Robertson takes over the mound for VT.
Frei gave him a warm welcome, hitting his first pitch. He pulled it far up the first base line all the way to the wall for a double.
Robertson walked Raymond in five pitches on the next at bat.
Woodson knocked in a perfect bunt for an infield single to load the bases.
On the third pitch to James Nunnallee, Robertson threw a two-seam fastball that got away from him and found the Bulldog's elbow. Frei comes in.
It didn't take long for Virginia Tech to bail out Robertson, bringing in Peyton Smith—a Texas A&M tranfser. 2.1 IP, 3K, 3.86 ERA.
The first offering is a strike for the 2-1 count on Bryce Chance with the bases loaded.
Chance hit a single to first base to bring in Raymond and keep the diamond spinning.
Teel smashed a line drive through to right field to bring in another two runs for MState. 104 mph off the bat.

Teel stole second base on a called strike.
Ace Reese battled for 11 pitches, launching a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring in Chance and make it 10-2 MState.
With a 3-1 count, Smith hit Sullivan for his 4th free trip to first base.
Teel stole third but he was caught out after coming off the bag.
Stallman grounded out to second base to close things out with five more runs for the Bulldogs.

Locurto struck out swinging for Valincius's 20th K of the season.
Ethan Ball hit a 448 ft homer on a ball breaking away to add another run for the Hokies.

Hughes was walked next as Valincius passes 90 pitches thrown.
Valincius left the field to a huge applause, deservedly, after a fantastic performance. He showed frustration, clearly wanting to stay in the game and finish this thing—ideally without giving away the homer.
Brendan Sweeney takes the mound for the Bulldogs.
Petrich singled to third base. Reese made the fielding play but followed it with a short throw to Stallman at first. Hughes advanced to third on the error.
Daniel struck out swinging for the second out and Sweeney's first K.
They caught Petrich in a pickle between first and second on the double steal and were able to get the tag. Umpires reviewed the tag and whether or not the runner made it home before the tag and it was determined they did not.

Reese hit a high flying ball out to Locurto for the out on a full count swing.
Sullivan was walked. On a Stallman hit out to right field, Sullivan went running for his life thinking there were two outs. When VT made the catch, he was shocked to see it end up back at first for the double play.

Daniel hit a flier out to Nunnallee who tracked it down for the first out.
Valincius took an error after making a bad throw to first on a hit by Cooke. Stallman tried to stretch out to make the catch but wasn't long enough. Cooke advanced to second on the miss.
Lutterman was hit by the Valincius delivery after swatting away four fouls in a row to put runners on first and second with one out.
Bases were loaded after a shallow single from Gibson flew into right field.
Grube ended the inning with a grounder into a 6-4-3 double play up the middle.

Yagesh returned to the mound with Stallman at bat. He hit a grounder directly into the VT shift to the right for the out.
Frei found a hit, singling through the left to get on base.
Raymond hit a fly out to left field for the second out.
Woodson hit a single to shortstop on his first look. Pete Daniel made a throwing error to send Frei to third and Woodson to second.
Nunnallee walked and Chance was hit by a pitch to bring in a run.

Valincius is up into the 40s on the pitch count heading into the bottom of the 4th.
Locurto hits a fly out to right field for the first out on the second pitch.
Ball followed with his out fly ball to outfield, this time to the left on the first pitch.
Hughes made contact without finding a glove, this time, for a base hit up the middle.
Petrich had no chance as Valincius snagged his sixth K with a nasty slider down low.

Yagesh found his stride quickly in the 4th inning, taking down Aiden Teel for his first K of the day.
Reese hit a fly ball out to center for the second out.
Noah Sullivan wrapped up the inning with a foul out near first that Gibson caught.

Cooke struck out swinging as the Hookies are back at it trying to break Tomas Valincius. A 95 mph sinker was the nail in the coffin.
Lutterman tripled on a hit down the line to right field. Nunnallee dropped the catch as he ran up on the wall. Ethan Gibson hit the sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the first run for VT.

Andrew Raymond walks in five pitches. He caught a foul ball deflection in the foot which added to his pain after taking two foul balls to the mask behind the plate in the last inning.
Woodson hit a huge bomb out to center but Hughes outran it and made the catch near the warning track.
Nunnallee hit a grounder to Ball who tossed it to Gibson for another out. Raymond advanced to second.

VT batting order picks up with Hughes, who struck out looking on the 3-2 pitch. 3 K's and all of them left looking for Valincius.
His success continues with a fourth strike out looking on Owen Petrich.
Pete Daniel was able to make contact but Frei grabbed the grounder and made the out to send them to the third.

Stieg gets back to work for VT at the mound.
Ryder Woodson is his first victim, striking out swinging at his seventh look after fouling off four.
Nunnallee poked a grounder up the middle back towards Stieg on the full count delivery but Pet Daniel was there to make the play to first.
Bryce Chance hustled to second for the double after beating Daniel in the shortstop position, bouncing through to center.

Chance's opportunity delivers as Teel hits him into home with a great hit, singled to center field.
Teel stole second, but it wasn't necessary with the Ace Reese 399 ft homer to send the Bulldogs up 4-0.
It's Reese's fourth home run of the year.

Sullivan celebrated back to his dugout as he watched the fourth ball and walked to first. Stieg's started showing cracks.
Catcher Henry Cooke approached the mound to try to calm the pitcher.
After a brief battle, Stieg walked Stallman as well on the 7th pitch.
Frei hit a fly ball out to right center for the final out.

Nick Locurto was his next take with another great fastball from Valincius to make quick work.
Ethan Ball was able to make contact sending a ball deep and sky high, where Teel was there to make the catch after it dropped in left center.
