Adeiny Hechavarría became the third member of the 2023 Long Island Ducks to return to a Major League Baseball organization on Friday when the 34-year-old journeyman infielder had his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals. 

Hechavarría, who last played in the big leagues in 2020, will join the Royals organization less than four days after teammate and, former All-Star, Daniel Murphy joined the Los Angeles Angels.

Hechavarría, best known for his time with the Miami Marlins, was the FloBaseball Player of the Week earlier this month. The infielder played in 38 games for the Ducks in 2023 and leads the league in doubles with 12. He had 34 RBI and was batting .295 at the time his contract was purchased by the Royals. 

The Royals can use all the help they can get. Major League Baseball’s worst team with an 18-50 record the day the club purchased the contract, is sending Hechavarría to Triple-A Omaha.  

Hechavarría has primarily played shortstop in his career.

No. Hechavarría was not added to the 40-man roster on June 16.

The longest stretch he had with a team was in Miami, where he played parts of five seasons. 

In his nine-year MLB career, Hechavarría is a career .253 hitter.
