OU Baseball Smashes 3 Homers vs. TTU; Cameron Johnson Cruises In 10-3 Win

It's Opening Day of the Division I college baseball season and that means OU takes on Texas Tech at the Shriners Children's Baseball Showdown today.

Cameron Johnson set the tone and kept Texas Tech from scoring early, and the offense exploded after the sixth inning as Oklahoma won the first game of the Division I college baseball season 10-3.

It's a somewhat misleading final in the Shriners Children's College Baseball Showdown opener at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Neither team could get the bats going against starters Jackson Burns and Johnson.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander Johnson registered a career-high 11 strikeouts on 105 pitches in six innings on Opening Day.

Picked to finish 14th in the SEC, the Sooners looked poised to make some voters look silly as Johnson stifled the lineup and OU hit three home runs in the final innings, including a grand slam in the ninth inning.

Texas Tech starter Burns struggled at times with his command, walking five batters, but left the game in the fifth inning having survived three big scoring chances by the Sooners. He allowed just one run.

Now it's time for Bedlam for the Sooners, who play rival Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. ET on Valentine's Day. For the Red Raiders, they'll play Vanderbilt at noon ET on the same day.

We're getting a review on a tag. Nothing changed.

Texas Tech At Shriners Children's College Baseball Showdown

Texas Tech opens the 2026 season on the road with its third appearance in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown in the past five years.

Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma Baseball Pitching Matchup

Cameron Johnson will get the start for the home team Sooners while Jackson Burns will pitch for the Red Raiders.

Johnson, a lefty junior, is one of the top pitchers in the country according to D1 Baseball and went 2-0 with a 5.57 ERA in 21 innings last season in 10 appearances and seven starts. Burns, a sophomore, pitched just .2 innings last year during opening weekend and missed the rest of the year.

Both pitchers are tall with matching 6-foot-6-inch frames. Johnson is also 256 pound and looks like he should be rushing the quarterback.

Texas Tech vs Oklahoma Prediction

Both teams are unranked in the D1 Baseball poll, but OU is No. 19 in one poll to start the season. The edge may be with the Sooners in Game 1.

Texas Tech Baseball Top Prospects Is Logan Hughes, OF

Hughes, a 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder, began his career at Stetson before transferring to Texas Tech, where he hit 19 home runs in a breakout 2025 season.

A strong left-handed hitter, he combines contact skills with power to all fields, and his underlying batted-ball data ranks among the best in the class. He profiles as a corner outfielder with some first-base experience.

Oklahoma Baseball Top Prospect Is Jaxon Willits, SS

Jaxon Willits, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound switch-hitting shortstop at Oklahoma, has been the Sooners’ everyday starter since arriving on campus. Over two seasons, he has hit .286/.394/.490 with 19 home runs and 21 doubles.

He also impressed in a 13-game Cape Cod League stint, batting .366/.534/.488. Stronger from the left side, Willits pairs solid-average tools, polished swing decisions and steady defense with enough arm strength to remain at shortstop.

When Is Oklahoma Baseball vs. Texas Tech First Pitch?

The first pitch is schedule for noon ET at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Its first of a triple header on Friday and the first of nine games on Opening Weekend.
