Tennessee is back on FloCollege to help kick off the 2026 collegiate season. Watch the Volunteers at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 3.

Two years ago, the University of Tennessee baseball team won its first national title, defeating Texas A&M in the championship series of the 2024 Men’s College World Series.

The title run set multiple records, continued the recent baseball dominance of the Southeastern Conference and ended a 15-year national-championship drought for the university.

Though the Volunteers finished their 2025 campaign shy of a repeat, the season was successful overall, ending in the Super Regional round of the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship and with a 46-19 record.

As the team prepares for the 2026 season, the quest for a fourth trip to the Men’s College World Series since 2021 will come under new leadership, as longtime staff member Josh Elander was announced as the team’s new head coach in late October.

Elander and the Vols will ease into the new season with an eight-game homestand, beginning Feb. 13, before heading to Arlington, Texas, for the final weekend of the 2026 College Baseball Series from Feb. 27-March 1.

Tennessee has participated in the event multiple times, but did not appear in 2025.

This year’s three games – against UCLA, Arizona State and Virginia Tech – will be broadcast live on FloCollege and the FloSports app as part of the wire-to-wire coverage of the 2026 College Baseball Series.

The College Baseball Series again will be held at Globe Life Field, home of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, and the three weekends of action from Feb. 13 through March 1 will include 18 teams.

Tennessee will be one of the six programs in town for the final weekend of action at the CBS and will be joined by Arizona State, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, UCLA and Virginia Tech.

The Vols enter the new season ranked No. 14 in the 2026 D1Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings and No. 6 in the powerful SEC, which is led by reigning national champion LSU.

Tennessee finished conference play in 2025 with a 16-14 record, which tied the Vols for seventh place in the 16-team SEC and earned them the No. 8 seed for the SEC Tournament.

Making the top 8 earned UT a first-round bye, and the Vols went on to defeat Alabama and top-seed Texas, before being shut out by eventual champion Vanderbilt in the semifinals, 10-0.

The season didn’t end there, however, as Tennessee defeated Miami (Ohio), Cincinnati and Wake Forest in regional play to earn a spot in the NCAA Fayetteville Super Regional. Unfortunately, that was the end of the line for UT, which lost to Arkansas in the best-of-three series, 2-0, with a return to the Men’s College World Series on the line.

In 2024, the MCWS came down to a winner-take-all final showdown after Tennessee and Texas A&M split the first two games of the best-of-three series at the iconic Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

The game- and title-winning moment came in the seventh inning, when a two-run home run from MCWS MVP Dylan Dreiling kicked off a three-run spurt that extended the Tennessee lead to 6-1. The Vols were able to hold on for a 6-5 victory.

On the way to the top of the college baseball mountain, Tennessee racked up a 60-13 record, becoming the first SEC team in history to collect 60 wins in a single season.

The performance also saw the Vols become the fourth SEC squad to win the conference’s regular-season title, SEC Tournament title and the national championship in the same campaign.

Additionally, Tennessee became the second No. 1 overall seed to win it all since the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship switched to its current format in 1999. Miami achieved the feat that season.

The baseball triumph was Tennessee’s 24th team national championship and the school’s first win since 2009.

The best baseball finish for the Volunteers before 2024 was a runner-up effort against Oklahoma at the Division I Baseball Championship in 1951.

When Does The 2026 College Baseball Season Start?

The 2026 college baseball season is slated to begin Feb. 13 with the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, which gets the NCAA action rolling for the Division I teams.

For Division II and Division III, competition was set to begin Jan. 30 for most programs.

How Did Tennessee Baseball Do In 2025?

With the amount of success the Tennessee baseball team had in 2024, including an America Baseball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year nod for head coach Tony Vitello, it was going to be tough for 2025 to match up.

However, the Volunteers did reach the Men’s College World Series in three of Vitello’s last four seasons, so eyeing another deep playoff run in 2025 definitely wouldn’t have been out-of-line thinking for UT and its fans.

Tennessee wasn’t able to repeat, but the season was a decent one.

The Vols finished conference play in 2025 with a 16-14 record, which tied them for seventh place in the 16-team SEC and earned them the No. 8 seed for the SEC Tournament. They reached the semifinals, before falling to eventual champion Vanderbilt.

When it was time to run it back in the NCAA Baseball Championship, Tennessee was one of a record 13 SEC programs to make the 64-team bracket.

The squad made a commendable run, reaching the Super Regional round, where the Vols fell to Arkansas with another trip to Omaha on the line.

The campaign ended with a 46-19 overall record, and not long after, the team had to say goodbye to Vitello, who moved on to become the head coach of MLB’s San Francisco Giants.

Vitello was 341-131 during his tenure at Tennessee from 2018-2025. He inherited a Giants team that was 81-81 in 2025.

What Happened In The SEC During The 2025 Collegiate Baseball Season?

The already dominant Southeastern Conference got even stronger in 2025 with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12, and Texas wasted no time making its presence known.

The Longhorns rolled to a 22-8 conference record to claim the SEC regular-season title in their debut campaign. That earned them an automatic spot in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, where they immediately lost to Tennessee, 8-1.

In the championship game of the 2025 SEC Tournament, the Vanderbilt pitching staff held off Ole Miss to secure a 3-2 victory and the fifth SEC Tournament title for the Commodores.

Following the tournament, the SEC found the national spotlight with a record 13 (of 16) SEC teams advancing to the Division I Baseball Championship.

LSU, 53-15 overall, went on to win its second national title in three seasons by defeating Coastal Carolina in the championship series of the Men’s College World Series. It was the sixth consecutive national championship for the SEC.

From start to finish, the Division I baseball season means 132 days together for the players and coaches, and teams may play in more than 50 games (56 is the maximum number of contests before the postseason).

By the time they won the Division I national championship in 2025, the LSU Tigers (of the SEC) had played 68 games, compiling a 53-15 record.
