Texas A&M Baseball Recap: Aggies Outlast USC At College Baseball Series

Texas A&M Baseball bounced back from a slow start and cruised to a 9-3 victory over USC at the 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series Weekend 3 in Arlington, Texas.

Though they were down 1-0 after four innings, the Aggies tagged a carousel of USC pitchers for nine runs in the second half of the game, scoring in four of their last five opportunities.

The win helps No. 7 Texas A&M improve to 10-0 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 2-8, including pair of losses this weekend at Globe Life Field, home of the World Series-winning Texas Rangers.

The initial damage for Texas A&M came in the fifth inning, when a persistent effort from the Aggies resulted in three runs. The inning featured a hit batter, a walk, two fly balls that advanced runners and three run-scoring singles.

In reaching base with the game-tying single, junior Braden Montgomery found himself on the basepaths for the 38th consecutive game. His three-run home run Saturday propelled the Aggies past Arizona State in a 4-0 win.

Texas A&M had 12 hits in the win, including three from Montgomery in six plate appearances. Seven Aggies had hits Saturday, while 13 runners were left on base.

When the wheels fell off for the Trojans, starting pitcher Tyler Stromsborg was two outs into his fifth inning of work. He’s credited with the loss, falling to 0-2 for the year. He went 4 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs. He walked three, hit one and struck out seven batters.

The Aggies also got a boost from Gavin Grahovac, who hit a ninth-inning home run to left field.

In all, USC sent seven pitchers to the mound, matching the strategy used in the Trojans’ 9-8 extra-inning loss to TCU on Friday.

The Aggies used four pitchers against USC, with Weston Moss earning the victory. Moss entered the game for starter Tanner Jones and offered two innings, giving up three hits and one run, while striking out three Trojans.

USC had eight hits, with four coming from sophomore KaiKea Harrison, who was 4 for 4 with one run and one RBI. The Trojans left nine runners on base.

Saturday was the first meeting between the Trojans and the Aggies since 2005. Texas A&M also won that contest, a 3-1 victory in Round Rock, Texas, but USC still leads the all-time series 4-3.

Their meeting in Arlington was part of the 16th day of baseball at Globe Life Field to start the 2024 season. The run ends Sunday.

This weekend’s Kubota College Baseball Series action is the final piece of two exciting weeks of college baseball the venue.

The festivities started with the Shriners Children’s College Showdown from Feb. 16-18. That was followed by the multi-part Kubota College Baseball Series, which has included Mid-Week Games (Feb. 20-21), Weekend 2 (Feb. 23-25) and now Weekend 3 (March 1-3).

USC helped open Weekend 3, but the Trojans did not have the same fortune the Rangers enjoyed in 2023.

Instead, USC suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 extra-inning loss to TCU Baseball, which hails from just down the street in nearby Fort Worth, Texas. TCU now is 10-0 for the season, including five one-run wins.

Texas A&M’s first game of the 2024 Kubota College Baseball Series Weekend 3 also was exciting, but it was much less eventful.

A pair of home runs early in the game helped the Aggies ease past Arizona State, while the pitching staff held the Sun Devils to just two hits – both by the same player.

The win helped the Aggies pick up their first road win of the 2024 season

All four teams competing on the final weekend of college baseball at Globe Life Field – Arizona State, TCU, Texas A&M and USC will be back at it Sunday for another pair of games.

Sunday’s schedule will see Arizona State and Texas A&M enjoying a rematch at noon Eastern, before USC looks for redemption against TCU at 4 p.m. EST.
