In what could be its final year in the Big 12, Oklahoma Wrestling will try to win its 24th conference title on the way out. 

The No. 18-ranked team in the FloWrestling preseason rankings will begin that quest on Nov. 19 with their Big 12 opening dual meet against North Dakota State. 

On Dec. 1, Oklahoma  travels to Missouri. The Tigers were an original member of the Big 12, but when the school left for the SEC in 2012, the wrestling team was without a conference as the SEC doesn’t support wrestling. 

Missouri, which won the Big 12 Conference Championship in the 2011-2012 season, joined the Mid-American Conference, where the program dominated in the MAC from 2012-2021. Missouri won the MAC Championship every year. They re-joined the Big 12 for the 2021-2022 season. 

Oklahoma will join the SEC in the summer of 2024 and of of October 2023 the program has yet to determine which conference it will wrestle in next season.

It sets up an intriguing slate, one that includes the possible final installments of Bedlam, at least in conference form, against Oklahoma State on Dec. 10 in Norman and Feb.18 in Stillwater. 

All this uncertainty comes at a time of massive change in the program this season. Roger Kish replaces Lou Rosselli as the head coach of the Sooners. Kish arrives from North Dakota State. The program lost seven wrestlers to the transfer portal. 

The good news? Oklahoma did add Stephen Buchanan, an All-American at Wyoming in 2021 and 2022, as well as 5 former national qualifiers in Antonio Lorenzo, Jace Koelzer, Cael Carlson, Deanthony Parker and Guiseppe Hoose.

Buchanan is the No.3-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds. 

The new squad has some early season challenges as the team heads to East Lansing for the Michigan State Open on Nov. 11. The Michigan State Open is streaming live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app.

The Big 12 Wrestling Championships are at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The BOK Center hosted the 2023 NCAA National Championships. The BOK Center hosted the championships in 2023 as well. 

What College Wrestling Teams Are In the Big 12?

The Big 12 wrestling members are different from other sports. Despite being in the Southeastern Conference for its other programs, Missouri competes in the Big 12. The SEC doesn’t have wrestling as a sport.
