Keishana Washington Named To USBWA National Player Of The Year Watch List

Drexel graduate guard Keishana Washington was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year watch list by the United States Basketball Writers Association on Wednesday. 

Washington, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, has established herself on the national stage as one of 21 players selected for the National Player of the Year watch list by the women’s basketball board at the USBWA.

The national recognition began earlier this season when the Pickering, Ontario, native was named USBWA National Player of the Week on Dec. 20.  

Washington ranks second in the NCAA, averaging 27.5 points per game, and is fifth in total points (413). 

Additionally, the graduate guard is second in the CAA in total assists (63) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.91), while ranking third in assists per game (4.2). 

Washington has reached double figures in every game this season, extending her streak with at least 10 points to 49 straight games. 

The league’s top scorer has recorded at least 20 points in 12 games and 30 or more on seven occasions, including a conference-high and program-record 42 points against Penn State on Dec. 18. 

The CAA was the lone mid-major conference represented on the award’s watch list. Washington was joined by student-athletes from the ACC, American, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC. 

The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is presented annually to the women's national player of the year by the USBWA. Named for the legendary UCLA guard, the award first was presented in the 1987-1988 season and formally named in Meyers Drysdale's honor in the 2011-2012 season. 

Ann Meyers Drysdale played at UCLA from 1974-1978, which pre-dates the USBWA All-America selections. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-1957 season.
